Pay once or pay monthly: the math for Project
Project is one of the applications that is used in the same way for years. A project plan from today will still be opened in five years, and the way of working rarely changes. In exactly this situation the subscription is the more expensive model: it costs every month per user, permanently, and access ends with the last payment.
You pay for a perpetual license once and use it for as long as the version is supported. Spread the monthly amount of your plan over 36 or 60 months and set that against the one-time price. With a used volume license the entry price is below the new price, and the payback comes correspondingly sooner. With several project planners in the company the effect multiplies.
Standard or Professional
The Standard edition covers classic project planning on your own computer: tasks, dates, resources, reports. For individual planners it is entirely sufficient.
Professional comes into play when several people work on the same plans and resources are coordinated across projects. It includes the connection to a central project server. The extra cost is only worthwhile where this joint planning actually takes place.
Where the subscription remains the better choice

Project is required for editing. For reading along, export the plan as a PDF or export the task list to a spreadsheet. In practice this is usually enough for steering committees and reports.
Can I exchange files with colleagues who use a different version?

Is Project included in Office?
