It comes as Standard and Professional Plus, is activated through KMS, MAK or Active Directory, and as a perpetual license it may be resold in the EU. What Office LTSC 2024 is
LTSC stands for Long Term Servicing Channel. Microsoft describes Office LTSC 2024 as the most recent edition of its core productivity apps for highly regulated or restricted environments that cannot take feature updates, available to organizations through volume licensing agreements. Unlike Microsoft 365 Apps, it does not receive feature updates after launch; according to Microsoft it regularly receives security updates and quality improvements, typically once a month on the second Tuesday, through its only update channel, PerpetualVL2024. Those updates are delivered over the internet but can be hosted locally for disconnected networks.
The lifecycle is fixed: Office LTSC 2024 was released on September 18, 2024 and has five years of mainstream support until October 9, 2029, with no extended support afterwards. Microsoft's lifecycle table shows the end as the timestamp "10/10/2029 6:59:59 AM" in Pacific Time, that is, the last moment of the previous day; the FAQ names October 9, 2029. For comparison: Office LTSC 2021 reached end of support on October 13, 2026, Office 2016 and 2019 on October 14, 2025. All dates are in Office end of support: 2016 to 2024.
The editions: Standard, Professional Plus, Mac
For Windows, Microsoft lists two Office products under volume licensing: Office LTSC Standard 2024 and Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024, plus Project and Visio, each as Standard and Professional. Professional Plus includes Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word; Skype for Business is an optional install during setup. Publisher is no longer included, because Microsoft will no longer support it after October 2026. Teams is not preinstalled but is available as a separate download. For macOS there is Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024; Access does not exist on the Mac.
| Edition | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote | Access | Platform | License |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Office LTSC Standard 2024 | yes | no | Windows | volume license per device |
| Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 | yes | yes | Windows | volume license per device |
| Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024 | yes | no | macOS | volume license per device |
| Office Home 2024 (retail) | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote | no | Windows, Mac | retail license |
| Office Home & Business 2024 (retail) | yes | no | Windows, Mac | retail license |
Office LTSC 2024 is supported on Windows 11, Windows 11 LTSC 2024, Windows 10 LTSC 2021 and 2019, and Windows Server 2025 and 2022; Office for Mac runs on the three most recent versions of macOS. What the end of Windows 10 support means for the devices and which LTSC dates apply is in Windows 10 end of support for organizations. Besides Standard and Professional Plus, the lifecycle page also lists an Embedded edition for devices.

Office 2024 or Office LTSC 2024: retail versus volume license
According to Microsoft, Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 are both one-time purchases with the classic applications and without the services of a Microsoft 365 subscription, and both come for Windows and Mac. The difference lies in the licensing route and the audience. Office 2024 is the consumer version: Home with four applications, Home & Business with five, sold as a retail license to consumers and small businesses under the Modern Lifecycle Policy. Office LTSC 2024 is the version for commercial and government customers through volume licensing agreements with a five-year fixed lifecycle. There is a technical point on top: Office 2024 requires an internet connection in certain situations and, according to Microsoft, is not a suitable solution for fully disconnected scenarios; Office LTSC 2024 can be installed without internet once the installation files have been downloaded and activated through KMS without internet.
That is the answer to the question of what a volume license version is: the same programs, but an agreement for many devices instead of one purchase per box, with central deployment, activation on your own network and one license per device that is assigned and reassigned by rule. The three license channels, retail, OEM and volume, are explained in What is a volume license?
LTSC or Microsoft 365 Apps
Microsoft 365 Apps is the subscription version of Office, continuously receiving new features and connected to the cloud services. According to Microsoft, Office LTSC 2024 does not include the latest cloud-backed features: no real-time collaboration, no AI-driven automation, no advanced security and compliance tools tailored for hybrid work. Anyone who needs such features on an ongoing basis is pointed by Microsoft to a Microsoft 365 plan.
| Criterion | Office LTSC 2024 | Microsoft 365 Apps |
|---|---|---|
| License model | perpetual license per device | subscription per user |
| New features | none | ongoing |
| Updates | security and quality, monthly | ongoing, several channels |
| Support | until Oct 9, 2029 | as long as the subscription runs |
| Use without internet | yes, updates can be hosted locally | limited |
| Cloud features | no | yes |
| Resale | yes, under EU law | no, time-limited |
The decision follows the environment. Machines on an isolated network, in production, in a public authority with fixed release processes or in a laboratory are the case LTSC is built for. Workstations that work with Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and Teams are better served by the subscription. What separates a subscription bought through the Cloud Solution Provider program from a perpetual license in licensing terms is explained in CSP license explained.
Deployment: Office Deployment Tool and Click-to-Run
Office LTSC 2024 is deployed with the Office Deployment Tool (ODT) and a configuration file, configuration.xml. The installation files sit on the Office Content Delivery Network; the configuration file specifies product, language, update channel and key and can be written in any text editor. The product IDs are ProPlus2024Volume and Standard2024Volume, and for Project and Visio ProjectPro2024Volume, ProjectStd2024Volume, VisioPro2024Volume and VisioStd2024Volume. Once the files have been downloaded, no internet connection is needed for the installation.
The installation technology is Click-to-Run. Microsoft calls the shift from Windows Installer (MSI) to Click-to-Run the most significant difference between Office 2016 and Office LTSC 2024. Previous versions of Office must be removed before installation; how that works for each predecessor is described in Office end of support: 2016 to 2024 in the section on the technical move.
Activation: KMS, MAK, Active Directory
According to Microsoft, activation of volume licensed versions has not changed. There are three methods: Key Management Service (KMS), where Office contacts a KMS host on your own network; Multiple Activation Key (MAK), where Office is activated online through Microsoft's activation servers or by telephone; and Active Directory-based activation for domain-joined computers. All volume licensed versions carry a preinstalled Generic Volume License Key (GVLK) for KMS and Active Directory; for MAK, each installation needs its own key. KMS needs no internet connection, MAK does. Thresholds, periods and check commands are in KMS activation and MAK.
License rules: assignment, 90 days, resale
Under the Universal License Terms of the Product Terms, a license must be assigned to a device or user before use; Office LTSC 2024 is a device license, Microsoft speaks of one device per license. Reassignment to another device is allowed no sooner than 90 days after the last reassignment, with the exceptions named in the Product Terms. Keep a date of assignment per license; that list is your evidence in a license audit, see Preparing for a license audit.
As a perpetual license, Office LTSC 2024 may be resold in the EU. Under Article 4(2) of Directive 2009/24/EC, the distribution right in a copy of a program is exhausted by the first sale in the Union by the rights holder or with the rights holder's consent; Section 69c No. 3 of the German Copyright Act implements this in Germany and expressly names the European Economic Area. The seller makes their copy unusable, the buyer receives the three documents: first sale in the EEA, the previous owner's declaration, the chain of ownership. For an organization this means Office LTSC 2024 can also be bought used, with the same rights and the same end of support. The rules by license type are in Transferring a Microsoft license.
