Windows LTSC Explained: Enterprise LTSC, IoT, Dates, Licensing

Published October 24, 2026 · Updated October 24, 2026
LTSC stands for Long-Term Servicing Channel: a Windows edition that receives only quality updates and no feature updates, for special-purpose devices. It comes as Windows Enterprise LTSC with five years of support and as Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC with ten years. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 runs until January 12, 2027, Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 until October 9, 2029.

What LTSC is
Regular Windows is serviced in the General Availability Channel: a new version with new features is released every year, and each version has a limited support period. LTSC takes the other route. According to Microsoft, devices on the LTSC servicing model receive only monthly quality updates; feature updates do not arrive every few months but only with a new LTSC release every several years. An LTSC installation therefore stays functionally the same for its whole lifetime and receives only security and reliability fixes.
Microsoft states expressly who it is for: the Long-Term Servicing Channel is not intended for deployment on most or all PCs in an organization, but as a deployment option for special-purpose devices and environments. That means machines whose function must not change for years because a certification, a machine control system or a line-of-business application depends on it. LTSC is not built for an office workstation with Teams, a browser and mail.
LTSC versus regular Windows
The difference is not in the core of the system but in the servicing model and in what ships with it. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 is based on Windows 10 version 21H2, Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 on Windows 11 version 24H2. What is missing are the parts that receive new features continuously in regular Windows: according to Microsoft, Microsoft Edge and the in-box Windows apps are among the features that are not updated with new functionality under the LTSC model. Edge itself has been included in-box since LTSC 2021. For support by apps and tools designed for the general availability channel, such as in-box apps and the Microsoft Store, Microsoft writes for LTSC 2024 that it might be limited.

Enterprise LTSC or IoT Enterprise LTSC
There are two LTSC families, and they differ on two points: support period and sales channel. Windows Enterprise LTSC had ten years of support up to version 2019. With LTSC 2021, Microsoft shortened the period to five years and itself writes that LTSC 2021 is therefore not a direct replacement for LTSC 2019; the same applies to Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024. The IoT edition keeps the ten years. According to Microsoft, Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC is released approximately every three years and supported for ten years after release.
The sales channel is the second difference. Enterprise LTSC is available through volume licensing agreements. According to Microsoft, IoT Enterprise comes through two routes: as an OEM license for device makers who preinstall the system on new devices and work with an authorized IoT distributor for that, and as a volume license through the Microsoft Customer Agreement, the MPSA and Select Plus, but not through the Enterprise Agreement. According to Microsoft, the IoT volume license is for upgrading existing systems with a qualifying operating system, does not cover new devices and is non-transferable; the OEM license is transferable.
IoT is more generous on hardware. For Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC, Microsoft lists the same preferred minimum requirements as for Windows 11, including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, but as an optional floor 2 GB of memory, 16 GB of storage, BIOS instead of UEFI and TPM and Secure Boot optional. Microsoft itself warns that leaving out the TPM on specialized devices can affect software the end customer needs later. For Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024, Microsoft lists no separate requirements; the general Windows 11 requirements apply.
The dates for every LTSC version
The LTSC versions have lifecycles of their own, independent of the end of Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That is why many special-purpose devices running Windows 10 are still serviced, while regular Windows 10 machines receive security updates only through Extended Security Updates (ESU). The LTSC versions are expressly excluded from the Windows 10 ESU program because they have their own lifecycles.
| Version | Released | Mainstream end | End of support | Term |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 | Nov 13, 2018 | Jan 9, 2024 | Jan 9, 2029 | 10 years |
| Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 | Nov 16, 2021 | Jan 12, 2027 | Jan 12, 2027 | 5 years |
| Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 | Nov 16, 2021 | Jan 12, 2027 | Jan 13, 2032 | 10 years |
| Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 | Oct 1, 2024 | Oct 9, 2029 | Oct 9, 2029 | 5 years |
| Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 | Oct 1, 2024 | Oct 9, 2029 | Oct 10, 2034 | 10 years |
On the dates: Microsoft's lifecycle tables show end dates as timestamps in Pacific Time, such as "1/13/2027 6:59:59 AM", that is, the last moment of the previous day in Redmond. This article uses the day before the timestamp throughout. For the IoT versions, Microsoft's IoT page gives January 13, 2032 and October 10, 2034 as the end of servicing. The most important date right now: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 has just under three months left. Anyone running special-purpose devices on it needs to plan for Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 now; all routes after the end of Windows 10 support are in Windows 10 end of support for organizations, the overview of all Microsoft dates in Planning for Microsoft end of support.
Moving and upgrading: what works and what doesn't
According to Microsoft, LTSC releases can be installed as in-place upgrades, and releases may be skipped; going straight from LTSC 2019 to LTSC 2024 is therefore possible. For IoT Enterprise LTSC, every move to the next LTSC release requires a new license; technically it works as an in-place upgrade or as a reinstall.
The way out of LTSC into the regular channel works: according to Microsoft, an upgrade from LTSC to the General Availability Channel is available when the target has the same or a newer build. The reverse does not: Microsoft does not support an in-place upgrade from the General Availability Channel to LTSC. Anyone who wants to move an existing Windows 10 Pro machine to LTSC therefore reinstalls. That is the answer to the common question of how to convert Windows 10 to LTSC: not at all, only through a fresh installation with the right license.
Licensing and activation
According to Microsoft, Windows Enterprise LTSC belongs to the Commercial Licensing channel, that is, to volume licensing, not to retail or preinstalled devices. Depending on the volume licensing program, it comes per user or per device. For all Windows client licenses from volume programs, Microsoft states: they cover upgrades to Windows client operating systems only, and each computer first needs a retail or OEM license for a supported version of Windows. How volume license, retail license and OEM fit together is explained in What is a volume license? A note on subscriptions: according to Microsoft, Microsoft 365 F3 does not come with Windows LTSC Enterprise.
Enterprise LTSC is activated like other volume licenses, through KMS, MAK or Active Directory. In its table of KMS client keys, Microsoft lists Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and 2019 in a shared row; according to Microsoft, these keys cannot be used with retail editions. The thresholds, periods and check commands for KMS activation are in KMS activation and MAK.
As a perpetual license, Windows Enterprise LTSC can be resold in the EU. Under Article 4(2) of Directive 2009/24/EC, the distribution right in a copy of a program is exhausted by the first sale in the Union by the rights holder or with the rights holder's consent; in Germany, Section 69c No. 3 of the Copyright Act implements this and expressly names the European Economic Area. The seller makes their copy unusable, the buyer receives the documents on first sale, the previous owner's declaration and the chain of ownership. The rules by license type are in Transferring a Microsoft license. For the IoT volume license, Microsoft's own description sets the limit: non-transferable.
Office fits in: according to Microsoft, Office LTSC 2024 is supported on Windows 11 LTSC 2024 and on Windows 10 LTSC 2021 and 2019. For special-purpose devices, the combination of Windows LTSC and Office LTSC is the setup without feature updates on either level, see Office LTSC 2024 explained.
When LTSC is the right choice
- The device has a fixed task: control, measurement, till, terminal, medical device. If the function does not change for years, LTSC is built for it.
- Feature updates get in the way: a certification or a line-of-business application cannot tolerate yearly system changes. LTSC keeps the function stable and still delivers security updates.
- The term fits the hardware: Enterprise LTSC 2024 carries you to October 2029. Anyone who needs longer and builds the device themselves should look at IoT Enterprise LTSC with ten years.
- Not an office workstation: for workstations with Teams, Store apps and Microsoft 365, the regular channel with Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise is the route Microsoft intends.
Frequently asked questions
What does LTSC mean for Windows?
Long-Term Servicing Channel: an edition of Windows that receives only monthly quality updates and no feature updates. New features arrive only with a new LTSC release every several years. Microsoft intends LTSC for special-purpose devices, not for most PCs in an organization.
How long will Windows 10 LTSC get updates?
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 until January 12, 2027, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 until January 9, 2029 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 until January 13, 2032. The Windows 10 ESU program does not apply to LTSC.
What is the difference between Windows Enterprise LTSC and IoT Enterprise LTSC?
Support period and sales channel. Since version 2021, Enterprise LTSC has five years of support and comes through volume licensing; IoT Enterprise LTSC has ten years and comes as an OEM license through device makers or as a non-transferable volume license for upgrading existing systems.
Can I convert Windows 10 Pro to LTSC?
Not by upgrade. Microsoft does not support an in-place move from the regular channel to LTSC; it takes a fresh installation with an LTSC license. The way from LTSC back into the regular channel works if the target build is the same or newer.
Can I move from Windows 10 LTSC to Windows 11 LTSC?
Yes, according to Microsoft LTSC releases can be installed as in-place upgrades, even skipping a release. For IoT Enterprise LTSC the move requires a new license; the hardware must meet the Windows 11 requirements.
Does Windows LTSC include the Microsoft Store?
On IoT Enterprise LTSC, according to Microsoft, the Store is not preinstalled; apps can be obtained through the web or WinGet. For Enterprise LTSC, Microsoft writes that support by the Store might be limited.
How much is Windows 11 LTSC?
Microsoft names no price on its product pages; Enterprise LTSC is obtained through volume licensing agreements whose prices depend on the program. Used perpetual licenses are an alternative, with the three documents on their origin.
